YOUTH RUGBY: St Brendan's U16 5 Chippenham U16 23
1:37pm Monday 17th January 2011 in Youth Rugby
CHIPPENHAM retained their Bristol Combination Cup title with a comfortable victory over St Brendan’s at Cleve RFC.
The sides had never met before, but St Brendan’s had deposed Cleve in the semi final and made a flying start.
Chippenham conceded several penalties, but their opponents were unable to capitalise and paid the price when the Wiltshire side broke out and Alex Grahame slipped through a tackle to touch down.
Blustery conditions made it tricky for Sam Wild, who missed the conversion.
St Brendan’s attacked again, but Chippenham were solid once more and when number eight Rhys Brown came off the back of the scrum and the ball was recycled, Kalif Barnes sprinted up the wing and over in the corner.
St Brendan’s finally registered as Dan Cook crossed the cut the deficit before half time.
In the second half, Barnes was unlucky not to score but did so when Dan Treacy unselfishly passed to him.
When Chippenham won a lineout midway into St Brendan’s half and mauled the ball upfield before Brown scooped up the ball and scored their fourth try of the morning.
St Brendan’s launched one final attack but still could not break through and, when Chippenham ran the ball back upfield and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts, Wild booted the kick over.
