Bassett Colts end with victory
 |
| Action from Bassett's game against Swindon on Sunday |
Wootton Bassett 5 Swindon 0
Bassett Colts rounded off their Colts season with a well deserved victory over local rivals Swindon on Sunday. The victory avenged two defeats at the hands of the visitors earlier this season in the Dorset and Wilts Merit Table competition.
Swindon dominated the first ten minutes of the match, playing fast and hard against the home side. The game was halted early on to allow Bassett prop James Hughes to leave the field to receive hospital treatment for a minor head injury.
Swindon used the strength of their forwards to good effect and set up a number of rolling mauls to gain significant progress towards the Bassett try-line. Bassett strong tackling meant that once the ball was released, Swindon's advantage was soon neutralised.
Over eagerness by the visitors meant that they were often penalised for being offside. One such incident gave Bassett's David Hogg a chance to open score points. His penalty kick just edging wide.
The game continued at pace and although Swindon dominated the scrum it was Bassett who one most of the ball in open play. Bassett's persistence in attack finally paid off with a move from leading try scorer Oli Stavrakakis who broke through several tackles to power over the line to score and secure a 5 point lead at half-time.
Bassett started the second half with a superb opening kick that immediately put the visitors under pressure. However, Swindon were keen not to go away empty handed, particularly following their 55-nil defeat to Salisbury.
Despite several well worked moves from Swindon, particularly from their forwards the Bassett defence was unbreakable. The home side's defence also closed down several attempted runs from Swindon's Nick Cousins who was wrapped up before getting up to full speed.
Bassett launched several counter attacks and winger Sam Robinson made a number of breaks that presented try-scoring opportunities.
Towards the end of the game Bassett were again awarded a penalty kick in the visitors half, the ball narrowly missing its target.
Swindon's Ben Loosemore worked tirelessly to command and lead the attack and kept the pace up to the end. Swindon certainly had shed loads of commitment, but were unable to get onto the score sheet.
