Bournemouth U15 7, Chippenham U15 12
Youth rugby: Chippenham's Under 15s won the Dorset & Wilts Cup for the second consecutive year in a bruising encounter with Bournemouth at North Dorset RFC on Sunday.
The game was a re-run of last year's final and lived up to all expectations. Bournemouth had the better start and maintained possession for the opening ten minutes. But despite the pressure, Bournemouth could not break the robust Chippenham defence.
But as the minutes passed, the balance of the game began to even out with Chippenham winning more possession. Chippenham's first try came from a tap penalty just inside the Bournemouth 22 when team skipper, Harry Ford took a short pass. From the ensuig maul, he dived for the line to take the five points.
The game then swung back and forth between the two respective ends for a period before Chippenham winger, Christian Novik took a blindside pass from scrum-half Nathan DUnford on the opposition ten metre line. Dunford out-stepped the Bournemouth defence to score between the posts and give Chippenham a twelve point lead going into the half-time break.
Chippenham opened the second half well, capitalising on their own kick to take play into the Bournemouth red zone only to be penalised at a subsequent ruck.
As in the first half, play switched from end to end with Bournemouth applying more and more pressure to the Chippenham line, managing to ground the ball but only after two previous attempts were held up.
With the score at 7-12 and with ten minutes remaining on the clock, there was everything to play for. Chippenham dug deep and took the game to a tiring Bournemouth side, ensuing the majority of the remaining minutes were played in the opposing half and thwarting all attempted counter-attacks with some superb defence.
The game was hard fought and could have gone either rway but Chippenham came away the victors having seized the initiative and then closing the door on their opponents.
