Little: Don't blame Thompson for relegation

Devizes Rugby Club captain Jamie Little doesn't blame Andy Thompson for missing a last-gasp kick that would have kept the Saddlebacks up.

Devizes were relegated from Southern Counties South on Saturday after losing 11-12 at home to Wimborne but could have survived had Thompson scored a late conversion.

"I've got a lot of sympathy for Andy because the wind was blowing straight into his face and it wasn't an easy kick," said Little.

"It comes down to the first half of the season and the time we spent experimenting with new players and bringing younger ones through. It's not just down to one kick.

"We didn't win a league game in the first half of the season and it has cost us.

"After that we pulled our socks up and beat the four teams above us but it wasn't enough."

But Little believes relegation to Dorset and Wilts One North could prove beneficial for the club.

"Going down really gives us the opportunity to rebuild, maybe win a few more games and get the confidence back," he said.

"It is one of these things which is happening to a lot of local clubs, we are going through a transitional stage."
