Mixed weekend for Saddlebacks
Rugby: Devizes' three senior teams had mixed fortunes last weekend as the first and second XV's lost to Oakmeadians and Colerne respectively but the 3rd XV did well to defeat Supermarine 29-24.
Devizes 2nd lost 25-0 at Colerne, proving once again that the heights of Bath are not happy hunting grounds for Devizes these days.
Colerne outplayed Devizes 2nd XV and scored four tries without reply in their victory.
Throughout the game Colerne monopolised set piece ball and Devizes had to rely on unpredictable and slow possession from rucks and mauls. A talented Devizes back division were therefore given few opportunities to demonstrate their skill. However fearless tackling kept Colerne at bay so that they were only able to post a slender lead by half time, 5-0.
Shortly after the break Devizes were taken unawares by a dummy scissors move stemming from a lineout in the Colerne half. It split the Devizes defence allowing a Colerne attacker to run 5O metres into Devizes territory and forcing a penalty that put Colerne 8-0 ahead. Another expansive move saw Colerne break clear and outpace the Devizes defence to score a second unconverted try , 13-0.
Devizes were finding it difficult to match the elusive running and support play of Colerne, very often returning possession to them through mishandling or poorly directed kicks. From one such mistake Colerne recovered the ball and ran in a try from the half way line to boost their score, 20-0.. Mike Litchwark got close to the Colerne line when following up a kick ahead but it was Colerne who completed the scoring with a try from a ruck close to the line. 25-0. The result rather overshadowed some fine individual performances from Devizes players. Flanker, Ioan Beddoe was very active in broken play situations, never shirked a tackle and won most of the lineout ball that Devizes obtained. He was well supported Liam Young and skipper Adrian Heneghan. It was good to see Andy Webb, back from military service in Afghanistan, making his usual robust contribution.
