Floyd inspires Bassett to victory
Rugby: A superb performance and a try from Bassett's inspirational skipper Dave Floyd sealed a second successive playoff for Bassett.
It looks like Oxford side Wallingford will be the opposition however Bassett must win next weeks top of the table clash with Trowbridge to guarantee themselves a home tie.
This Saturday's game had a lot riding on it which led to nervy play from both sides and despite a lot of early possession and territory for Bassett the deadlock wasn't broken until mid way into the first half. A poor clearance kick from Corsham saw the ball fall into the arms of the charging winger J.P Travis who shrugged off about four defenders to stroll over under the posts for a brilliant solo try. Centre Tim Gallimore stepped up and slotted an easy conversion to give Bassett a well deserved lead.
Bassett came straight back at the home side and some poor discipline allowed them an easy option at goal which captain Floyd decided was the best option with minutes left in the half. So Tim Gallimore duly obliged and slotted it with ease to give Bassett a 10-0 lead at half time and one foot in the door of the playoff's.
The second half started in pretty much the same fashion as the first with both sides producing some scrappy play. However again it was Bassett who were to dominate with number eight Alex Penny and replacement full back Grant Murdoch both making superb individual breaks and being held up literally centre meters before the line. However eventually the elusive second half try came as fittingly Captain Floyd picked up from the base and drove over which basically sealed the playoff position again for Bassett. Gallimore again made the conversion to give Bassett a 17-0 lead.
Corsham then enjoyed a brief period of territory and possession as Bassett took their foot of the gas. From this a straight forward backs move led to their centre bursting through the line to score under the posts after a rare defensive mix up from Bassett. The conversion was made as the lead was reduced to ten points at 17-7. However after some more pressure in the final play of the game Bassett had another chance for three points. Again Floyd pointed to the posts and again Gallimore obliged as the game ended 20-7 in Bassett's favour.
This was not a great performance from Bassett but it was mission accomplished as they booked their place in the playoffs. However there's still all to play for as they can still finish joint top and secure a home tie in the playoff if they win next week against top of the table Trowbridge in an end of season Blockbuster.
