Minety 60, Cricklade 3

Rugby: Returning to form, Minety inflicted a ten-try defeat on Cricklade.

Inside centre Max Sparrow darted through a packed defence to score Minetys opening try after his forwards had tied in the opposing pack with a catch and drive move from a lineout.

After giving away a succession of penalties, from one of which Cricklade kicked a goal, the hosts finally settled into their rhythm. Minety dominated the scrums and their back row of Charlie Gawthropp, Max Smith and Jack Ward had an outstanding afternoon both in defence and with the ball in hand.

A handsomely delayed pass by skipper Martin Coe set winger Ryan Dowling away for a try in the corner before Dowling set up Minetys third try with a sweetly struck chip infield from the touchline. Scrumhalf Tom Fitzcharles gathered it and swept in for a score under the posts.

Minetys fourth was scored by fullback Reuben Saunders, who bust into the three-quarter line at pace and sliced through the defence. Aran Lightfoot wrapped up the half with a 30-metre sprint down the touchline for a score after a break by Sparrow had set Cricklade in disarray.

Ward got things moving in the second half with a pick up from the base of a scrum. Taking the tackle, he slipped the ball to Fitzcharles who weaved his way 60 metres downfield to score.

Strength and determination took Coe up a narrow blindside for try number seven, while Ward broke from a driving scrum to dive over for try number eight.

A much longer run by Ward set flyhalf Tim Vaughan away for a try before Vaughan in turn sealed victory for Minety by catching an attempted clearance kick and running it back at the opposition. The ball was passed to Dowling, who scampered down the touchline for a final try. He then successfully kicked the conversion, his fifth of the afternoon.

Minety face a stiff challenge this Saturday as they travel away to Calne for their final league game of the season.
