MATT Garvey has been handed the captaincy at Bath for the new campaign.

The versatile back rower, who joined the club in 2013, is closing in on 100 appearance for The Rec men.

Director of rugby Todd Blackadder believes that the conduct of the 29-year-old, on and off the field, makes him the perfect candidate to lead the side.

“Matt will play a huge role in leading the club as we strive for improvement in all areas going into the 2017-18 season,” Blackadder said.

“He is a very strong character who leads by example both when playing and everyday around the club.

“He has the respect of everyone involved with Bath – players, staff and supporters alike - and we know that he will help ensure we meet the high standards that we set ourselves.”

Garvey added: “Captaining Bath Rugby is a role I am incredibly proud to take on. This is a great club to be part of, and I wanted to step-up and help lead from the front to achieve the success we all want.

“We’ve done a lot of work over the summer identifying what we need to do, on and off the field, to get there.

“A key part for us is that we repay our fantastic supporters for their unwavering backing, and also reconnect with the city itself – we are very proud of the city of Bath, and we want to be rooted in the heart of our community.

“On the training field, we’ve had a good start to pre-season. We are really focused on the areas we need to improve, and we can’t wait to get the new season underway.”
