BATH full-back Anthony Watson kick-started an England landslide as the host nation bowed out of the World Cup with a 60-3 win over Uruguay.

With nothing on the game, in the sense that neither side could qualify for the knock-out stages, there was a relaxed feel around a full Etihad Stadium.

England were clearly given licence to entertain but failed to go to plan in the opening minutes when Felipe Berchesi kicked the first points of the game with England caught offside.

In the eighth minute Watson made it onto the end of a kick through from Jack Nowell and just got the downward pressure in time to beat the advancing dead ball line.

Nick Easter was on the end of a driving maul to extend the hosts advantage in the 18th minute, before it was Easter again who was on the back of another England drive to the line before picking the ball up and going over the line in the 23rd minute.

However, with England failing to dominate the breakdown again and a lack creativity the first half petered out with the home fans resulting to Mexican waves and paper aeroplane contests to keep themselves entertained.

It was Watson who opened the scoring in a much more entertaining second half, as he went over the white-wash within two minutes of the re-start From an attacking scrum five-yards out, George Ford was able to put the ball wide to Alex Goode, whose quick hands put in Watson in the corner. However, Owen Farell missed his first kick of the tournament with the attempted conversion.

Henry Slade was able to extend England’s lead in the 55th minute, after some fine work with his feet following a charge down on the left wing.

In the 57th minute, Goode’s pace put him clear before passing to Danny Care in support and his move infield drew in the defender for him to put in Nowell for England’s fifth try.

Bath’s Jonathan Joseph came on to replace Farrell in the 59th minute, seconds before another driving maul from a five-metre line-out saw Easter go over for his hat-trick.

However, Ford, now on kicking duties, missed the conversion attempt.

One of the biggest cheers of the night came for the arrival of former Melksham youth player Mike Brown, who came on to replace Watson.

England went over for their eighth try of the game when they went wide to Nowell and the wing completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute, however Ford continued his dismal night in front of the posts as he failed to convert both.

Ford was given a gimme in front of the posts from the last play of the game, when he was awarded a penalty try, to ensure he didn’t finish pointless to wrap up the comfortable win.
