REPLACEMENT hooker Matthew Dwyer scored a last-gasp try as the Ospreys stunned Bath 13-10 at the Rec to inflict only a second home defeat of the season on the Aviva Premiership high-flyers.

Dwyer, a 30-year-old sergeant in the Welsh guards, went over in the 79th minute to silence a capacity 13,400 crowd and earn the Ospreys their first success in this season's LV= Cup.

Sam Davies converted Dwyer's try to go with a brace of penalties, while Bath were left empty-handed despite taking a 10-3 half-time lead through tries from Richard Lane and Max Lahiff.

Ospreys' disappointing run of results in the competition meant a semi-final place was out of the question for the Welsh side even before kick-off, while Bath had little chance of progressing either.

Both sides had an unfamiliar youthful look about them as a clutch of Academy and squad players again stepped up to the plate in the absence of the international stars.

A bitter wind swept in on the Rec from the north east to make handling difficult in scrappy opening 10 minutes.

The first score came in the 14th minute after Horacio Agulla, making his 50th appearance in a Bath shirt, launched an attack from his own 22.

Prop Kane Palma-Newport and Ollie Devoto supported and Sam Burgess was on hand to kick through for wing Lane to touch down. Devoto's conversion was wide.

Tom Grabham was proving a handful on the Ospreys right wing and he combined well with flanker Sam Lewis to threaten the Bath line. Home skipper Stuart Hooper was forced into killing the ball close to their line, earning a yellow card, and fly-half Davies slotted the penalty to make it 5-3 after 19 minutes.

Bath went back on to the attack and a succession of penalties resulted in a spell in the sin-bin for visiting prop Marc Thomas. The home side soon capitalised with a catch-and-drive try after 37 minutes for loosehead Lahiff on his first start for Bath. Devoto was again wide with the conversion to leave Bath just seven points ahead at the break.

Scrum-half Chris Cook came off the bench to inject energy into Bath's game but there was no scoring in the third quarter In the 57th minute Aisea Natoga became the second Ospreys player to see yellow, for a deliberate knock on as Bath threatened their line. Bath spurned the kick at goal but could not score from the lineout catch-and-drive.

Davies had a pot at goal at the other end on the hour mark but his penalty attempt dipped under the bar.

Grabham threatened again in the 69th minute, carving through the Bath defence until hauled down by Burgess, although at the cost of a penalty kicked by Davies from 30 metres.

More worrying for Bath was an injury to Agulla who seemed to fall awkwardly when gang tackled on the Ospreys 22. He could not bear any weight on his left leg as he was helped from the field.

The game suddenly came to life in a frantic last five minutes when Ospreys broke out of their half after prolonged Bath pressure. The home defence then found itself spread-eagled when fly-half Davies made a break and Dwyer was on hand to canter home unopposed. Davies added the conversion to seal the victory.
