RUGBY: Chippenham 31 Old Patesians 19
5:00pm Tuesday 11th September 2012 in Rugby
CHIPPENHAM bounced back from their opening-day defeat at Newton Abbot with a bonus-point success in their home National Three South West opener at Allington Field.
Fly-half Connor Gwilliam knocked over and early penalty for the visitors but Chippenham scored the first try through centre Gary Champion, Sam Saunders converting.
Old Pats, coached by former South African international Thinus Delport, then went in front as scrum-half Matt Mudway and wing Will Kane set up fellow wing Lee Taylor for a try that Gwilliam converted from the touchline.
As Pats lost hooker Chris Dean to the sib-bin, Saunders drew his side level with a penalty and Chippenham went back in front before half time when wing Christian Novik, jinked through the defence to score, Saunders converting.
Chippenham scrum-half Lewis Surry was first on the scoresheet after the break, as he carved a path through the defence, Saunders again converting.
But the visitors hit back through second row Gethin Evans, who supported well after a kick and chase, Gwilliam adding the extras.
With both sides getting bogged down, Fraser Clilverd and his Pats counterpart Ben Walsh were sent to the sin-bin after a punch-up.
But Chippenham finally killed off their rivals as Bobby Lyons ran in the bonus point fourth try, Saunders again converting.
