Martens to stay on as Chippenham coach

Chippenham Rugby Club coach Hentie Martens has ended the uncertainty surrounding his future by agreeing a new one-year contract with the club.

The former South African international joined the Allington Fields club at the start of last season as a player/coach after their promotion to South West One.

Despite only achieving 12 points and fininshing bottom of the league, Martens says he had no hestiation about agreeing a new deal.

“I am going to be staying,” he confirmed. “The only concern was it was a little bit doubtful whether I would still be in the country or not.

“But my wife and I have decided that we are going to stay for another year at least.”

Chippenham escaped relegation following a restructure of the English leagues.

They will compete in the National Three South West division next season and Martens says he is looking forward to the challenge, even though he is struggling to understand the changes.

“I haven’t had a chance to look at the fixtures yet but they are against the same teams so at least I know we haven’t been relegated,” he joked.

“We learnt a lot from last season. We know where we stand now and I’m excited for September.”
