CHIPPENHAM kept their outside title chances in South West One East alive with a dominant 52-15 victory away at Salisbury.

The Allington Fields side are now 10 points adrift of leaders Old Patesians with two games remaining.

For Chippenham, who currently sit third, to be crowned champions they would require bonus-point wins in each of their remaining two fixtures and Old Pats to fail to pick a point themselves.

They would also require at least one slip-up from second-placed Banbury, who are a point above Chippenham but have three games still to play.

Brad Doggett bagged a brace of tries against Salisbury, while Ed Hendy, Ben Riley, Gareth Angell, Jacob Unwin and Miles Davies also got over the whitewash.

A penalty try completed Chippenham’s haul of eight, while Dan Wainwright added 12 points with the boot.

Although their chances of league success are slim, Chippenham were looking to get a piece of silverware to their name last night in the final of the Bath Combination Cup against Keynsham.

Chippenham earned their place at the Rec – home of Aviva Premiership side Bath – after beating Oldfield Old Boys 40-10 in the semi-finals seven days prior.

Elsewhere, Royal Wootton Bassett made the most of home comforts as they dispatched Grove 47-7.

Fin Dewar will take the plaudits after a hat-trick of tries, in addition to efforts from Chris Pattinson, Sam Robinson and a penalty try.

Skipper David Hogg chipped in with one conversion before being subbed off through injury, as Tom Fieldsend landed four conversions of his own after stepping in.

Bassett team manager George Loughlin said: “We were comfortable in the first half and then in the second, we took our foot off the gas a little bit, although we still scored a few tries.

“The bad news is our skipper Dave Hogg, who has just returned from injury, took a knock.

“We only have a few games left this season, and if we can win two of the last three games then we could finish in the top half, which would be great.

“Currently we are eighth and we always said mid-table would be great, but if we could get top half, then that would be the icing on the cake.”

Bassett faced a swift return to action as they were due to travel to second-placed Banbury on Wednesday evening.
