CALNE warmed up for this weekend's South West Junior Vase final against Gloucester side Spartans by putting Cricklade to the sword 54-7 in Dorset & Wilts Two North.

The home side's bigger pack took early control with captain Tom Morten and Pete Brownlie working well at set pieces and at the breakdown.

Number eight Bruce Harper was a constant threat from the back of the scrum, while scrum-half Dan Treacy controlled the game well and winger Jay Watkin broke through to score the opening try, Liam Kearney adding the conversion.

From the restart Cricklade attacked with purpose and were quickly back on level terms with a converted try.

But the next Calne try came from another dangerous run from Watkin, while further scores followed from Morten, Mark Webber, Treacy, Cameron Davies and brother Rhys Davies.

Calne's final against Spartans kicks off at Anchor Road at 2pm on Saturday, with a place in the national semi finals - one win from a Twickenham final - up for grabs.

Calne chairman Chris Austin said: "We knew Cricklade would take the game to us and they are a good side who have had a good season.

"We are in a good place right now and ready for the cup final this coming Saturday.

"I understand Spartans will be bringing over 100 spectators to the Rec so it would be great to get lots of home support to cheer us on.''
