ROYAL Wootton Bassett fell to their first away defeat of the season as they succumbed to local rival Swindon 17-5.

The visitors took the lead when a well-worked phase saw Connor Tomley break two challenges before feeding full-back Daniel Rees to go over the line.

However, Swindon rallied and when they capitalised on a missed pass from Bassett in the midfield, the loose ball was kicked forward before being touched over the line by Oliver Wilson.

A well-worked set-piece then saw Swindon move the ball across the pitch for Wilson to get his second of the game to edge the hosts further ahead before the break, and then a penalty shortly after the re-start gave them a 17-5 advantage.

Bassett piled on the pressure for much of the second period but Swindon held firm.

Elsewhere, Chippenham were unable to lift themselves off the foot of South West One East in a 17-10 home reverse by Oxford Harlequins.

The hosts were quicker out of the blocks and took the lead courtesy of a Harry Taylor penalty, but Quins quickly responded with their first try.

After building pressure, the home side got back in front when Luke Corbett crashed over, Taylor adding the extras.

However, Oxford were in the lead by half-time with a converted try.

A second converted score after the break settled matters, despite a battling Chippenham display.
