ALAN Low believes over-confidence may have crept into Royal Wootton Bassett’s game after they saw their winning run ended in a 33-17 defeat at home to Witney on Saturday.

Bassett had won six matches on the spin in South West One East but saw that sequence come to a shuddering halt at Ballards Ash.

All looked well for Bassett early on as they seemed in total control of the contest but Low’s men began to lose their way, allowing Witney to capitalise and claim a convincing victory by the time the final whistle sounded.

“We were disappointed with the way we played, it’s as simple as that,” said head coach Low, whose side drop from second to fourth in the table.

“Potentially, there was a little bit of complacency after a good start. We’ve obviously had a good start to the season but also during the game, as we went 14-3 up and we looked really comfortable.

“Then we started making basic errors and that’s something that hasn’t been in our game and it’s something we have got to look at.

“It was a disappointing day at the office. In the first half we played some good rugby, we went 14-3 up and created probably another three or four chances but we failed to execute and it was down to errors.

“Witney came back into the game and in the second half, they were the better side.”

Although disappointed by the defeat, Bassett still boast an impressive record of six wins from eight fixtures following last season’s promotion from Southern Counties South, so Low will not be reading the riot act and will instead put it down to a rare slip-up.

“It was an off-day but there are no panic stations or anything like that, it was just one of those days,” added Low.

“If someone had said to us in the summer we’d have six wins out of eight going into a new league, that would have been something that dreams would have been made of.

“We just have to look at the last performance and the reasons why we were below-par and that’s down to the boys because there were a collection of individual performances that weren’t up to scratch and that has a big impact on the side.

“We didn’t to do well on Saturday but we are really happy with where we are at the moment, however, what will define how this squad can move forward is how we react and how we put things right.”

Chippenham were unable to follow up their first win of the season against Old Centralians as they were thumped 54-17 at title-chasing Old Patesians.
