CHIPPENHAM and Devizes both made progress into December’s Dorset & Wilts 3rd XV Cup quarter finals with thumping victories at the weekend.

While Devizes were blitzing Swanage & Wareham 65-19, Chippenham ran in six tries in a 41-29 triumph over their Swindon counterparts.

Both sides observed a minute’s silence for former Chippenham player Dave McMillan prior to kick-off and Chippenham scored first through fine inter-play from Mark Adams, Ritchie Stone converting.

Stone added a penalty but despite losing Andy Cunnington to a calf injury, bringing veteran Martin Schrader into the fray, Geoff Prudhoe added to Chippenham’s tally with a try.

Both sides then traded tries, Williamson crossing for Chippenham, before Stone booted a further penalty.

James Cook added another score after the interval, but Swindon, boosted by the scrum dominance of their pack, responded with a score of their own.

Chippenham lost Henry Kirkpatrick to a yellow card, but they added further tries through Williamson and Tim Dunford to seal their progress despite a late Swindon response.

Chippenham will host Salisbury in the December 3 quarter final, with Devizes hosting Dorchester.

Royal Wootton Bassett’s hopes were ended as they were beaten 68-10 by Bournemouth in the first round.

The other quarter finals will be between North Dorset and Oakmeadians, while Bournemouth will host Wimborne.

The second XV Cup and Shield competitions resume at the quarter final stage on December 3.
