DEVIZES wrapped up fourth place in Southern Counties South with a bonus-point success on the south coast against Wimborne.

The Saddlebacks leapfrogged Marlborough, who were heavily beaten at champions Royal Wootton Bassett, to end their campaign on a high.

First XV manager Matty Holloran said: “It’s been a privilege to manage the team this season.

"A massive well done to all the young lads who have stepped up this season.

"Players like George Starr, Jordy Walker, Hamish Quigley, Stan Alsop have all come in and done really well and developed since playing first team rugby.

"Also a big thank you to John (Kimberley) for doing a great job coaching us again this season”.

The match started in frantic fashion and it wasn’t long before Devizes scored the first try of the day.

It came after a surging couple of carries from Lewis Paget which paved the way for forays from the pack close to the line.

Captain Josh Gould bundled over from close range for his ninth score of the season The home side came back into it with a penalty to reduce the deficit but missed a further chance and when Paget made another break, although the ball went to ground, Rory Brown picked up the loose ball and surged his way over before adding the conversion.

This was followed by an electric break down the right flank by Josh Lewis, before the best moment of the afternoon came from prop Toby Randall, whose footwork and dummy completely mesmerised the defence on a 40-metre run.

Brown again was on the end of a slick move to make it 17-3.

The bonus point score arrived before the half time whistle after neat work down the right flank again, allowed Jorge Wadman to go over with Brown converting.

The second half got off to the perfect start for Devizes after an overlap was created and after breaks from Mark Carter and Wadman, a superb offload found its way to Travis Orwin who managed to get over the line.

The last half hour was a scrappy affair, with the hosts rewarded just after the hour mark with a try after some pressure on the Devizes try line after scrum-half Tom Collins was sent to the bin for a dangerous tackle.
