CHAMPIONS Pewsey continued their perfect league season in Dorset & Wilts 2 North when they powered to a 72-22 victory over visiting Bath Saracens.

Vale were on the scoreboard within one minute of the off, flanker Olly Spence powering in from 20m to dot down between the posts, with fly-half James Haynes adding the extras.

The next four tries came in quick succession. Wing Toni Bloomfield dashed down the flank, scrum-half Nick Damper crossed from a close-range ruck, number eight Phil Vallis ran in from the base of a scrum, and centre Chris Takel showed pace from his own 22. Haynes converted two.

Pewsey changes reduced the pressure on the visitors and the score remained 31-0 at half-time.

Saracens opened the scoring five minutes into the second half with a well-taken try in the corner but Pewsey replied with another Takel long-range try from the restart.

That was followed by one for replacement flanker Ben Mortimer, converted by Haynes, before Takel completed his hat-trick.

Saracens replied with an unconverted try but Pewsey then scored two tries in three minutes. First up, wing Reid Buck sprinted to the corner before centre Will Bowerman crossed the whitewash after a scramble for the line.

One minute later, after a brilliant catch and side-stepping run from full-back Frank Poulson, Bloomfield was in for his second of the day, sprinting in from the halfway, converted by Haynes.

Saracens were not finished and a lapse in the Pewsey defence let them in for a try in the corner with five minutes to go.

From the kick-off, Vallis gathered the ball and drove forward with prop Phil Hobbs in support. The duo sliced through the visitors’ defence and offload to a charging Spence, who got his second try of the day.

A last-gasp converted try at the final whistle earned the visitors a losing bonus point.
