PEWSEY Vale wrapped up the Dorset & Wilts Two North title as nearest challengers Avonvale were put to the sword at Wilcot Road on Saturday.

Vale are now 30 league points clear with only four games remaining, handing them a return to One North next season..

Pewsey were first on the scoreboard after 10 minutes when, following a period of pressure, a free kick was forced at the scrum.

A quick tap saw number eight Phil Vallis plough over for the score, fly-half Gareth George’s conversion hitting the upright.

Two more tries before half time gave Pewsey the buffer to defend against the slope in the second half.

On the half hour a loose ball was kicked through from halfway and the chase to the ball was won by centre Olly Spence who dotted down for the score.

Then a free kick quickly taken and driven forward by scrum-half Nick Damper was taken on by flanker Nasim Alam, who offloaded to Vallis sending him over for his second of the day, George adding the extras.

The second-half defence by both teams was direct and rigorous but Pewsey broke the deadlock with three minutes left when Damper took a quick tap penalty five metres out and burrowed over for the bonus-point try.

Avonvale scored a consolation converted try on the final whistle.

Pewsey coach Mick Haynes said: "This has been a long campaign, since November 7 15 games in a row with only Christmas off has taken its toll.

"There were seven changes to the starting XV from the cup game (South West Junior Vase final defeat to Widden Old Boys) and it was a great squad effort, coping with senior players injured and not available.''
