CALNE moved to within two points of third spot in Dorset & Wilts Two North on a day of celebration for the club.

Welcoming new sponsors Bevirs Solicitors and Calne Lions Club on their vice presidents and sponsors' day at Anchor Road, Calne were sporting their new playing strip and their powerful pack soon established dominance.

Props Pete Brownlie, Tom Morten and hooker Dave Evans put in solid performances and it was forward play that set up winger Rob Merritt to score the first try in the corner, converted by Rhys Taylor.

Saracens stayed in touch with a couple of penalties but Calne's defence was proving strong, Chris McAlonan, Rich Kearney, Mark Webber and captain Tom Morten putting in some strong tackles.

Second rows Matt Johnston and Jay Watkins continued to provide the power but number eight and coach Alan Wicks broke off a ruck to power over the line, Taylor adding the extras.

A Saracens try cut the deficit but Calne's response was immediate, the scrum pushing their opponents back across the line allowing Wicks his second score, again converted by Taylor.

Wicks was narrowly denied a hat-trick score, the referee instead awarding a penalty try.

Calne chairman Chris Austin said: "This was a great day for Calne Rugby. We are very grateful to our new match shirt sponsors Bevirs Solicitors and the Calne Lions Club who kindly sponsored our new post protectors and flags.

"We certainly look the part and we will look to have a strong finish to the season.
