PEWSEY delivered an 11-try exhibition of go-forward rugby to destroy their west Wiltshire visitors and remain the top of the table.

From the kick-off, the hosts attacked and with less than two minutes on the clock, wing Toni Bloomfield was over in the corner.

By the quarter-hour, centre Chris Takel and hooker Jeremy Horton had both crossed for tries, fly-half James Haynes adding a conversion and a penalty.

The visitors’ stemmed Vale’s flow for a 15-minute period, but the threat from a potent Pewsey was ever-present. When the break came, the home team ran in four tries in the 10-minute period before half-time.

Bloomfield was first in for his second of the day and next up, number eight Chris Spence with a brace, first a pick and go from the base of a scrum then a run-in on receiving the restart.

More go-forward play saw prop Phil Hobbs cross before half-time, Haynes adding all the conversions for a 46-0 interval lead.

Pewsey scored four second-half tries in the same manner as the first.

Horton was in for his second after 15 minutes followed 10 minutes later by centre James Mattingley, who showed blistering pace to touch down under the posts, the latter converted by Haynes.

In the last 10 minutes, two more tries came from Takel, which Haynes converted, before lock Mike Paddick finished proceedings.

Pewsey coach Mick Haynes said: “This was a storming performance of power and speed, with outstanding support play and ball skills of the highest quality.’’
