PEWSEY produced six converted tries in 60 minutes of running rugby that overwhelmed a competitive Calne in Dorset & Wilts Two North.

The visitors stuck to their task and, using good field position and a significant weight advantage, were rewarded with two tries in the last 10 minutes.

Ten minutes in Pewsey fly-half James Haynes opened the scoring with a well-taken try following a line break as he dashed in from 20 metres to dot down between the posts and convert.

Pewsey dominated field position for the whole of first half and another score finally came on the half hour.

Scrum-half Tom Haynes made the break from the base of the scrum and hooker Jeremy Horton, in support, took the pass and bullocked his way to the line, James Haynes converting.

Collecting the ball from the second-half kick-off, prop Olly Spence ran through a ragged defensive line to the visitors’ twenty two, offloading to centre Charlie Dixon who finished off in style, the score converted by Haynes.

Three more converted tries in the next 20 minutes closed out the game.

A double from wing James Mattingley, both run in from 60 metres following top-drawer backs play was followed by number eight Phil Vallis emulating with a dash to score between the posts. James Haynes kicking the goals.

With ten minutes to go Calne took field position and scored two forward-driven tries.

Pewsey coach Mick Haynes said: "This was an outstanding performance. With enforced changes to the team list during the holiday season, the strength in depth of the squad produced the goods. Those playing out of normal position are to be congratulated on a job well done.

"The forwards set the tone working hard in all phases of play to produce a good quality ball. The back line was tremendous, showing great skill and nous to unlock the visitors’ defence.''
