ALAN Low described Royal Wootton Bassett’s convincing victory over Bradford on Avon as their best performance this season.

Bassett got off to a strong start, with a sustained set of phases.

Before the 10-minute mark, young winger Josh McCafferty, playing only his second senior game, made a break before feeding flanker Gavin Ougan who went in under the posts. Skipper and second row David Hogg converted.

Bradford offered resistance particularly in the set scrum. Their number eight Ed Dawson picked up from the back of the scrum to drive over and reduce the deficit to 7-5.

McCafferty’s fine afternoon continued halfway through the first period, Bassett secured ruck ball on the 22 and the ball was shipped quickly along the line for the wing to race over.

Veteran centre Tim Gallimore fed another youngster, Elye Darragh who went over in the corner for another try. Bassett added two further scores before the break from Hogg and number eight Chris Patterson to stretch the lead.

Within five minutes of the restart a Gallimore break fed scrum-half Ashley Stephens who chipped neatly ahead for second row Joe Pettit to touch down.

Fly-half Jonathan Clarke outwitted the defence with a neat sidestep for the next try. Patterson added his second try but his efforts saw him stretchered off.

A late McCafferty try in the corner completed the scoring with Bassett winning 53-5.

Low was absolutely delighted by the result, which saw his side go level on points with Midsomer Norton at the top on Southern Counties South, but was equally enthralled by the performance.

“It was our best performance so far this season,” said the head coach.

“Bradford conceded a few points early on this season, but haven’t been conceding of late and they put in some good performances at home, so it was by our best performance by far.

“It is one thing in getting a win, but the performance was pleasing across the board.

“Our execution was fantastic, we scored three tries from our own 22. We played with confidence, we didn’t rush things, especially in the opposition 22.

“The result didn’t reflect how hard the game was.

“We played three colts Josh McCafferty, Elye Darragh, and Jake O’Neil. Everyone single one of them was fantastic, they stepped and showed what they can do.”

Bassett are unbeaten since late October and now lie second in Southern Counties South on points difference.

Elsewhere in Dorset and Wilts One North, Bassett II beat Supermarine. A result Low thinks shows the strength in depth at the club.

“Result of the day for the club was the second 15 showing how they can play.

“They make selection every week for the first team difficult.”
