DEVIZES booked their place in the semi finals of the Dorset & Wilts Cup as Royal Wootton Bassett were put to the sword at London Road.

After an impeccably observed minute’s silence following the death of life member Vince Gaiger, Devizes quickly got into their stride.

A break down the left wing allowed Jorge Wadman to send full-back Luke Rapson away for the first score, scrum-half Rory Brown soon following him across the whitewash as fly-half Andy Thompson converted.

A Bassett infringement allowed Thompson to boot his side further ahead with a penalty and Devizes held the advantage at the scrummage, Bassett’s cause not helped by the loss of prop Gary Williamson to injury.

Matt Loader got Bassett on the board with a drop goal but Josh Lewis scored his seventh try in four matches, converted by Thompson, before Bassett lost Chris Patterson to the sin-bin.

It wasn’t long before Wadman cantered over just before the break after excellent hands down the left flank, Thompson again adding the extras.

The second half started in a similar fashion with Devizes continuing their dominance in the scrums. The backs worked their magic and were rewarded as Wadman sprinted over, Thompson converting.

A trademark Lewis run 60 metres down field then saw ball quickly recycled for Craig Bryant to dot down in the right hand corner, converted by Thompson.

Devizes were in again as Rapson collected the ball and counter-attacked, using his footwork to speed over.

Bassett enjoyed their best spell, forcing their way over after a few phases for a consolation score.

But the final ten minutes were all Devizes as a three-try flurry started with South African centre Travis Orwin riding tackles to power over.

Fine work from Sam Jones on his wing set up Josh Gould to add another and centre Mark Carter continued his recent try scoring run as he spotted a gap in the defence to burst through.
