JOE Knight has been crowned the Bath and Wiltshire Romans’ players’ player of the year at their awards night.

The event, which was held at the MOD Corsham Officers Mess, saw the club, who were only set up in January, hand out three awards.

The top gong of the night, the players’ player, went to Knight following some outstanding performances this season after signing from Trowbridge.

Having started on the wing, Knight has now found his natural rugby league position and featured regularly at loose forward.

The Romans have also looked to him for goal-kicking duties.

Knight also has the ability to break the gain line and catch defences unaware, which has aided him in becoming one of the teams top try-scorers over the course of the season.

Steve Flintoff was named the club’s most improved player of the year.

The big prop, who is new to the 13-man code, rarely missed a training session this term and has crashed over to a couple of tries this year.

One the club’s founders, Chris Chatten, was honoured with the Roman of the Year award.

Chatten makes sure fixtures are arranged, supports coaching staff at training, on match days and during the week to ensure arrangements are in place to put on a game.

The Romans will be gunning for revenge over Bristol Sonics on Sunday when the two collide in the West of England League play-off grand final at Corsham’s Leafy Lane (2.30pm).

The Sonics arrive in Wiltshire after beating Somerset Vikings last weekend and also claiming a 32-28 victory over the Romans the previous week.

The winner of the West of England Grand Final will go onto play in the Harry Jepson Trophy knock out competition against other regional league Grand Final winners between September 5 and 12, with the final seven days later.

The winner of the Harry Jepson Trophy will also gain a place in the historic Challenge Cup next year.
