TABLE-topping Chippenham continued their winning ways in South West 1 East with a convincing win over Newbury at Allington Fields.

Newbury attempted to keep the ball alive but found the Chippenham defence robust and solid, resulting in a knock on.

From the scrum, Chippenham attacked and man-of-the-match Aaron Clark made the first of many darting runs but again Newbury were penalised for not rolling away.

This time skipper Fraser Clilverd, passed the ball to Sam Saunders and he expertly added the three points with five minutes on the clock.

Chippenham made good ground but due to the Newbury spoiling tactics, couldn’t make much headway until the visitors gave away another penalty which saw the hosts go through the phases to see Ryan Surry cross out wide. Saunders added the extras to make it 10-0. with 11 minutes gone.

Newbury ill-discipline saw them lose second row to the sin-bin as the referee began to lose patience.

Chippenham focused on the game and attacked with purpose going right and then left with the pack to the fore. Clark and Andy Rossiter went close before the ball was fed out to Surry was fed the ball and he went over for his second of the match, which was converted by Riccio before Newbury kicked a penalty.

Chippenham maintained their focus and Surry canterted over again to complete a first half hat-trick for the hosts to go in at the interval 22-3 up.Chippenham lost Matt Bye to the sin-bin when he was adjudged to be offside at a ruck before prop Luke Corbett also saw yellow too.

Chippenham were down to 13 so Jamie Atkin was brought on as prop for the next Newbury scrum and Chippenham were left light out wide. Newbury used this to their advantage and swung the ball right for the winger to score an unconverted try.

With Chippenham back to full numbers, a lineout throw from Clark picked out Lyons and the hosts drove forward. The ball found its way to Ben Riley to crash over for the bonus point score.

Newbury did manage to score two more tries sandwiched in between a Jamie Atkin score which handed the South West 1 East leaders the 32-20 success.
