CHIPPENHAM bounced back from their first league defeat of the season by putting local rivals Devizes to the sword in South West One East.

The home side claimed the Alf Dunster Cup – played for by the two sides – as they put memories of their previous home reverse to Witney behind them.

Devizes were in the game early on and fly-half Rory Brown slotted an early penalty for the visitors.

Chippenham responded with powerful surges from the pack and scrum-half Lewis Surry’s quick thinking in taking a tap penalty and diving over brought the first try of the match.

The home side started to spread the ball at pace, but it was a fine move from Bobby Lyons that opened up the blindside for winger Ryan Surry to crash over.

Turning the screw, a clean lineout take by Matt Bye allowed John Turner to barrel over on the blindside, Sam Saunders landing a tricky conversion in the wind.

Within a minute of the start of the second half, Chippenham had all but sealed victory as Lyons committed the last defender and sent winger Aminiasi Titoko over for the bonus-point try, Saunders converting.

With Devizes tiring, scrum ball was eventually sent out to Frazer Clilverd, who crossed the line, Saunders converting.

A further four tries followed in the final quarter.

Nick Aston took the ball cleanly from the restart, his superb break sucking in defenders before Dom Riccio advanced up field and offloaded to Clilverd, who crashed over the tryline for his second, Saunders again adding the extras.

Then recycled ball allowed substitute Aaron Clark to burrow over the line for the seventh try.

Saunders landed another fine conversion before Clilverd set up Bye, who thundered over for his third try of the season.

Riccio’s break and pass to full-back Jimmy Owen then allowed the New Zealander to offload to substitute Steve Barber to touch down for the final score, which Saunders converted.

All three senior Chippenham sides won with the second XV beating Devizes 2nd XV 32-25 and the third team winning against Melksham 2nd 28-21.
