DEVIZES’ relegation fears deepened as Bletchley claimed their first South West One East victory of the season on Saturday.

Things started badly for the Saddlebacks with Chris Barter (injury) and Chris Lewis (unavailability) pulling out before kick-off Early Devizes indiscipline allowed Bletchley an opening unconverted try but the visitors responded with a dominant spell.

Despite a number of openings, Mark Carter being held over the line and good carrying from Lewis Paget, the home side held out.

Then an interception allowed Bletchley to move upfield before a cross-field kick saw them touch down for their second try.

Stern words from Devizes head coach John Kimberley fired his side up for the second half and, a kick to the corner, followed by a drive from a lineout allowed prop Tom Reed to crash over from short range.

The conversion was missed, but Devizes continued to batter away and Rory Brown booted a penalty to cut the gap to two points.

However, Bletchley took advantage of a couple of errors and, from a five-metre scrum, powered over the line to extend the lead to 15-8.

Reed was denied his brace as again from a rolling maul, the referee being blind-sided and not seeing the grounding.

But Devizes continued with the pressure and were rewarded with a pushover try from number eight James Gaiger, Brown adding the extras.

With honours even going into the final stages, another error from the restart handed Bletchley the incentive.

After a series of reset scrums deep in the Devizes 22, the home side powered over for the decisive converted score.
