CHIPPENHAM got their South West One East campaign off to the perfect start as they claimed the derby spoils against RFU Intermediate Cup holders Trowbridge.

Danny Thomas’s visitors were relegated from National Three South West last season, but their campaign to make an instant return to that level began well as they notched six tries at Doric Park.

Chippenham opened the scoring after a Trowbridge penalty failed to reach touch.

The visitors ran the ball back and winger Hugh Campbell scored out wide, but Sam Saunders failed with the conversion.

The second try came shortly after when scrum half Lewis Surry put number eight Bobby Lyons in for at the corner, but Saunders again missed with the extras.

Trowbridge, now under pressure, started to make mistakes giving away several penalties and again the visitors scored with a carbon copy of the first try with wing forward Nick Aston applying the finish, Saunders again missing the conversion.

The hosts got themselves on the scoreboard when some strong forward play enabled prop Karl Parry to touch down and Lloyd Davis added the extra two points.

But Chippenham responded quickly. Ryan Surry and Brad Doggett, both converted by Saunders gave them a 29-7 lead going into the break.

Trowbridge started the second half at a pace and were rewarded when Sam Edwards got over the line, again converted by Davis.

A second-half try from Surry plus penalty from Saunder wrapped up the victory for the away side.

But Trowbridge managed the score of the game as Ashley Chalk caught Lloyd Davis’s cross-field kick.
