THE last rites on Chippenham’s two-year stay in National Three South West were read on Saturday amid Lydney title celebrations.

The Allington Field side’s relegation back to South West level rugby was rubber-stamped as the Forest of Dean men scored 11 tries to confirm their elevation to National Two.

The power of the Lydney pack made the difference, securing three penalty tries, although Chippenham battled bravely to score three penalty tries of their own.

Lydney had wrapped up the bonus point inside 20 minutes, courtesy of tries from Tony Wicks, Mike Wallis, Matt Boobyer and Sam Arnott.

Chippenham responded after half an hour as winger Will Waddington ran in, but the first of three penalty tries award by referee Chris Thomas soon followed.

The visitors staged a revival towards the end of the half, with Lydney hit by injuries and a sin-binning, scoring tries through Chas Day and Frazer Cliverd, Lewis Surry adding a conversion.

But the home side totally dominated the second period, second row Jimmy Roberts, fly-half Chris Holder twice and wing Charlie Vine touching down and two more penalty tries adding to Chippenham’s pain.
