A SERIOUS injury to full back Mark Young, who suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle after 30 minutes, added to Pewsey’s woes as they lost a crucial basement battle to their county rivals.

The subsequent half hour delay, followed by the loss of hooker Jeremy Horton before half time disrupted Vale’s rhythm and focus.

Pewsey started brightly and were on the board when wing Matty Mercer followed up a kick and chase to touch down for a try converted by scrum-half Tom Taylor, who added a penalty on 15 minutes.

Two minutes later the intercept of a loose pass as Pewsey attacked saw the Calne winger Jay Godfrey sprint in from 50 metres to score under the posts.

Restarting after the ambulance had cleared the pitch, Pewsey appeared subdued and unforced errors crept in.

A Calne driving maul from 20 metres out resulted in an unconverted try and the half-time lead.

The home team scored a further converted try and a penalty in a second half that saw Pewsey stutter around the pitch.

The other Calne tries came from Keith Bradley and Dave Evans, Liam Kearney adding a penalty and conversion and Adam Welch a conversion.

Vale did cross the line again but were adjudged held up by the referee.
