RUGBY: Title target for Devizes
DEVIZES team boss Stuart Hadden believes his side have every chance of winning the Southern Counties South title – if his players maintain their never-say-die spirit.
Saturday’s 32-6 triumph over Bath side Walcot took the Saddlebacks, who narrowly missed out on promotion last season, two points clear at the top of the table.
Hadden insists there is no way that his side will get carried away, with scope for plenty of twists and turns between now and the final day of the season on March 23.
“We had a long chat about an hour-and-a-half before the game on Saturday where we told the lads that, like in any sport, if they work as hard as they can, they’ll get their rewards,” said Hadden, who has seen his side rack up four wins on the trot.
“Our coach, John Kimberly, is one of the best coaches in the South West and he does so much work with the lads to improve their skills.
“We’ve got more than enough ability to win our league.
“But what’s important is that we carry on doing as much as we can and it’s completely down to us.’’
Fly-half Andy Thompson booted 12 points and Chris Lewis, skipper Tom Collins, Julian Taylor and Chris Barter scored tries to see off Walcot.
“On Saturday, it was a struggle because it was just so cold and some of those fingers must have been like ice cubes,’’ added Hadden, whose side host fifth-placed Dorchester on Saturday.
“But our ball handling was pretty good and we kept on battling to get the bonus point we needed.
“We aren’t looking too far ahead too because there’s still a long way to go.
“Devizes isn’t just about the first team but it’s about the second, thirds, the ladies, the coaches, the committee, the sponsors and the supporters.”
