RUGBY: Devizes 19 Frome 14
5:00pm Tuesday 23rd October 2012 in Rugby
FLY-HALF Andy Thompson booted 14 points as Devizes ended their month-long home exile with a victory to stay in touch at the top of Southern Counties South.
Making a good start in front of fine home support after a vice-presidents’ and sponsor’s lunch, the Saddlebacks got their first try of the day, as a scrum in the middle of the park allowed number eight James Gaiger to offload to captain Tom Collins.
Young full-back Ryan Webb came into the line and sent Jorge Wadman over for his third score in the last three matches, Thompson converting.
Devizes were though creaking in the scrums, although Frome were unable to take advantage, missing two penalties.
Eventually though, the set-piece pressure told, bringing the visitors a converted penalty try.
However, Frome didn’t escape the referee’s whistle either and Thompson booted three penalties before the break to give his side a nine-point lead.
Thompson notched his fourth penalty after half time with another straightforward kick but, with both sides nullifying each other defensively, it wasn’t until late on that Frome scored a pushover try, after Devizes loosehead prop Toby Randall was sin-binned.
