Jones celebrates another super victory
East Kennet permit trainer Peter Jones, featured in the Gazette last week when his charge Stripe Me Blue won at Kempton, found himself in the winners enclosure again this week when Georges Boy 11/2 won the Windsor Partners Amateur Riders Handicap Chase at Plumpton on Monday.
The ten year old was expected to run a good race on Saturday at Chepstow but according to his trainer he missed the break and was unable to dominate which meant it became a lost cause and he was pulled up.
Jones added : " The ten year old came out of the Chepstow race well, and when I trotted him up Sunday we decided to let him run again and the move paid off."
This time the ten year old got off to a good start under Alex Merriam, a late booking, and made all to win by 8 lengths from Celebrity Call.
At Hereford Barbury Castle trainer Alan King saddled Oh Crick to a fourth successive victory in the Handicap Hurdle at Hereford also on Monday, the trainers 91st winner of the season.
However it didn't earn the five year old a trip to the Cheltenham Festival with connections having their eye on a 2 mile novice hurdle at Aintree following the Festival.
The trainer was reported as saying Cheltenham will come too quick for him as we only took the chance of running him here after his recent Exeter success as this was a £16,000 race.
He added : " There is a two mile novice hurdle at the grand National meeting which will give him plenty of time to recover, I think he will be a decent chaser next autumn whatever else he does this season.
King now need just one more winner to equal his best tally of 92 and feels like getting to 100 winners would give himself and all those associated with the yard great satisfaction.
The columns selections in last weeks Gazette included winner of the feature race of
the day at Kempton on Saturday Gung Du 4/1, together with Binocular at the same meeting and winner of the Winter Derby trial at Lingfield, Dansant.
Flushed with success there are plenty of meeting to choose from this weekend with the local Newbury meeting getting underway at 1.35 with armchair racing fans catered for with four races televised by Channel 4 racing from the meeting plus two from the jumping meeting at Kempton.
Doncaster's seven race card begins at 1.50 and includes the televised Grimthorpe Chase that could see a few Grand National hopefuls go to post for the three mile two furlong handicap chase.
Saturday specialist Paul Nicholls makes the trip up north from his Somerset yard with Mr Pointment and they could just have the edge over Grand National fancy Cloudy Lane.
Last weeks local winner Stripe Me Blue holds an entry in the first race on the card at Newbury, the National Hunt Novices Hurdle but will need to pull out all the stops if he is to beat the Philip Hobbs trained Cryptic and Henrietta Knights Openditch.
In the Veterans Handicap later in the afternoon the 3mile two and a half furlong trip could suit Royal Auiclair and Space Cowboy could be a popular choice in the Novices Handicap Chase for the Jacky Upton Trophy.
Kempton's meeting gets underway at 1.45 where the best bet on the card could be the Nicky Henderson trained Boomshakalaka in the novices chase.
All weather flat action begins at Wolverhampton at 6.50 with an Apprentice Handicap that could go to Compton Classic.
Others worth an interest on the card could be the Ogbourne trained Queens Mantle, the mount of leading all weather rider Chris Catlin while Faringdon trainer Sean Curran saddles Sagunt in the 8.20 and the five year old could be worth an each way interest.
