TOCKENHAM show jumper Jessica Mendoza helped Britain retain team gold at the FEI Pony European Championships in Fontainebleau.

Mendoza, a winner of both team gold and individual bronze in the competition last year, incurred just four faults to help Britain triumph over hosts France and third-placed Switzerland.

“It feels really good to have helped win the gold,” said the 16-year-old.

She also performed strongly in the individual competition, finishing fourth after the first round before her mount Tixylix refused the final fence, which would have led to another shot at gold.

Mendoza added: “She jumped amazingly well, it was just a real shame about that last fence. It's been brilliant to bring home another gold in my last season as a pony rider.

“Tixy is amazing. She’s now won four golds and one bronze in five Europeans – quite a record for one pony,”

Mendoza is now aiming for the International horse show at Olympia, which celebrates its 40th year, in December.
