Leg-spinner Adil Rashid would consider an England Test recall having impressed coach Trevor Bayliss with his fine limited-overs form.

The 30-year-old, who has not played a five-day game for his country since 2016, has taken 25 wickets in limited-overs internationals this summer and his sharply-turning delivery to remove Virat Kohli at Headingley on Tuesday left the India captain dumbfounded.

Rashid is only playing white-ball cricket for Yorkshire due to a contract he agreed in February, yet he could be ready to don the whites again for England if he is selected for the forthcoming five-match series with India.

“Right now I’m focusing on white-ball cricket for Yorkshire – starting with Friday’s Roses match against Lancashire – but if England do want me to be part of the squad for the Test series against India then I’ll consider it.,” Rashid said in his diary for Sky Sports Cricket.

“I made the decision earlier this year to focus on playing white-ball cricket to see how it felt but always knew that if I found I was missing red-ball cricket then I would go back to it.

“So if the selectors come and show faith in me then I would consider it, whatever role they want me to do.”

England are short of spin options heading into the India series, when slower bowlers are expected to have a big impact following a summer of hot and dry weather.

Moeen Ali was dropped after a poor winter and recent call-ups Dom Bess and Jack Leach have limited Test experience, yet the conditions mean Bayliss’ team at Edgbaston next month could have two spinners in it.

Asked whether Rashid would be considered if he was playing red-ball cricket, Bayliss replied: “Possibly. This year is probably the best we’ve seen him bowl.

“He’s bowled well in one-day cricket over the last few years but his control and his consistency this year has been top class and probably the best I’ve seen him bowl since I’ve been here.

“(Reconsidering) is a decision he’s got to make. I’m not sure whether (national selector) Ed Smith’s had a chat with him or not. Could he get picked in the Test team on white-ball form? Well, it’s already been proven this year – it’s happened once (with Jos Buttler). So I’m sure he’ll be up for discussion, definitely.”

Moeen, Bess and Leach are all expected to get their chance to impress in Worcestershire’s Specsavers County Championship contest with Somerset, which begins on Sunday.

Having missed England’s last three Tests, Moeen appears to have rediscovered his mojo in England’s recent one-day international successes but Bayliss wants him to impress with the red ball too.

“We’d like to see him do it in four-day cricket,” Bayliss added. “His one-day cricket hasn’t been a lot different really.

“He’s a confidence player and that’ll be a decision we have to make before that first Test. Do we take in two spinners for some of these games?

“It is a bit drier this year and if we do we need to decide who those two are going to be.”
