New crash terror for Bridewell's parents

Superbikes: Worried mum Liz Bridewell has described the moment son Tommy came off his bike and broke his leg as heart-stopping.

The 19-year-old from Etchilhampton was making his debut in the Italian Superbike Championship at Mugello on Sunday and suffered a fracture of his right tibia after being knocked off on the first lap.

It brought back memories of the tragic death of brother Ollie, 21, who was killed last July at Mallory Park in a practice session for round nine of the British Superbike Championship.

To make matters worse Liz and husband Marcus were faced with an anxious wait while Tommy was treated by the medical staff before they could see him.

"It was a heart-stopping moment," said Mrs Bridewell.

"We saw on the monitor there were a group of bikes down and Tommy's was in the middle of the track.

"The medical centre at the track was brilliant. In England I would have just barged my way through but out there I had to wait for Tommy to be examined."

But despite his accident, Mrs Bridewell will not stop Tommy from racing.

"We have always said, and we have gone over it so many times, we will support the children," she said.

"If Charlotte and Tommy, and in the past Ollie, wanted to do something we would support them.

"But I wouldn't even dream of letting him go out to Italy on his own yet."

Tommy said: "I stood up, not realising I had broken my leg, and fell over again.

"I was then hoping and praying I wouldn't get hit by 30 riders."

It was a disappointing end to a successful weekend for Bridewell as his fall from his Suzuki GSX-R1000 on the second bend came after he made a flying start from eighth on the grid.

He is likely to need an operation to insert a metal rod but could return for the third round at Vallelunga on May 25.
