Gravel girls overcome gearbox gremlins

Rally: Highworth's all-female rally crew of Shelly Taunt and Julie Murphy, driving their GlobalExpense & OCM Capital Markets backed Subaru Impreza, finished 27th in the North Humberside Forest Rally.

Based in Whitby, North Yorkshire, they came a creditable 27th o/a out of an entry of over 100 competitors at the weekend when they entered the third round of the BTRDA (British Trials Rally Drivers Association) Championship.

After scoreing maximum points in the Clubman Production class Taunt now heads the leader board, but with six events still remaining the Championship is still wide open.

The duo, filled with confidence after finishing the Robin Hood forest stages 7th o/a and 3rd in class, were determined to continue with their pace whilst on the North Humberside event, but, just 2 miles into the first 10 mile gravel stage the car had developed an oil leak. Concerns grew when the pair were aware of blue smoke bellowing from the exhaust, they continued to the end of the stage with caution and had then soon discovered the leak was from the gearbox and the oil was dripping onto the exhaust. With another stage to complete before they were able to reach their management crew, they headed off at a steady pace, with the stage only being 3 miles long luckily the pair hadn't lost to much time. Their waiting management crew had confirmed that the leak was coming from the gearbox and with no hesitation and only minutes to spare their mechanics had re-filled the empty gearbox and sealed the leak for the girls to continue. With no further problems the team were able to attack the remaining stages, conditions had changed from the morning run but it suited the girls and they gained valuable places and moved further up the leader board as the day went on.

After six long stages and torrential rainfall and over 26 crews retiring the grateful and excited pair finally arrived at the finish with only 3 minutes remaining of their allowed lateness.

The team also supported by Silverstone rally school. Guest & Fiore Bricklayers, ASF Sign Factory, 710 oils, Questmead and Silverstone Competiton Tyres, will now have a months break ready for their next event the Somerset stages on Saturday 26th April.
