WILTSHIRE racing driver Simon Norris is confident he can claim the Saloon Car Championship at the Castle Combe Circuit’s Grand Finals Race Day this weekend.

The 39-year-old, from Holt, only needs to finish seventh or higher in his class to win the outright championship, having already claimed six out of seven race wins in Class B to claim that respective title.

“I’m a bit torn with how to approach this weekend, prior to now I should have been driving a bit more conservatively, I shouldn’t have been racing against the Class A cars,” said Norris, who has been competing this season in a Mitsubishi Colt.

“Getting involved with Gary Prebble or Dave Scaramanga could easily result in an accident or something going wrong.

“I’m looking forward to this weekend, I’m a bit more, not nervous, but I know there’s more riding on this weekend because it’s the final race weekend.”

In the same series, Chippenham’s Will Di Claudio has already claimed the Class D title in his Citroen Saxo.

In the Formula Ford 1600 class, former champion Ben Norton could still finish second overall while reigning champion Roger Orgee only needs to finish third to be guaranteed another title.

Norton, who won the championship in 2009 and 2012, has claimed one win as well as three podium spots this year but is disappointed not be in with a chance of the title in the final round.

“The season has been a bit up and down, we’ve had a bit of bad luck with a puncture in one race and a bolt shearing off in another,” said the 38-year-old, who drives for the Wiltshire College entry and is from Bratton.

“With the competition being so competitive one or two bad results when you’re not on the podium puts you out of contention.

“When things have all worked out I have had good results but I’ve just not been consistent enough.

“I’m disappointed in one respect because you enter to try and win the championship but I think we still showed we are fast enough to be at the front and it’s always nice to be able to do that.”

Bradford on Avon’s David Vivian has already claimed the Class B title and sits sixth in the overall standings, one place ahead of Chippenham’s Luke Cooper whose best result this season has been a third-place and fastest lap in the opening round.

The Castle Combe Circuit’s Grand Finals Race Day will take place on Saturday with the first of the day’s races taking place from 12.40pm.
