A FAMOUS works team race car is taking to the track 65 years after being specially designed for the Le Mans 24-hour race.

The legendary Aston Martin DB2 was one of three made for the 1950 Le Mans race and is now being prepared to return to the track this weekend.

Motorsport enthusiast Tony Green, 65, is planning to take the 3-litre, 270 bhp twin cam engine Aston to Silverstone on Saturday.

Green has entered the car at the Vintage Sports Car Club Spring Start meeting and will run in the George Abecassis Trophy race, an event open to cars once driven by the famous racing driver.

A former member of Devizes Motor Club, Green is well known in rally circles and is planning to race the car with its famous number plate, VMF 65.

“It’s all centred around the number 65. The car is 65 years old, as am I,” said Green.

“But the car’s the star. I am very privileged to get to drive it at the event.

“It’s been a couple of busy weeks getting the car ready for its return to the race track and I am very honoured to drive a car that has been driven by the likes of Stirling Moss, Rob Walker and Eric Thompson.”
