WOOTTON Bassett’s Avon Division campaign got off to the perfect start with victory over their county rivals.

Chippenham seized the lead with a breakaway goal, but the Bassett breakthrough came when Ali Sammon exploited the space on the left wing and sent returning striker Kyle Barnes through for his first goal of the match.

Bassett new boy Rob Pamphilon made several important saves and his side finally took the lead when Barnes’ effort was well saved and the rebound fell for Jake Nunns to slot home.

The second half started with the visitors piling on the pressure, equalising early on from a well-taken penalty corner.

Bassett went back on the attack and retook the lead when Mark Skivington and Matt Daniell combined to set up Barnes for his second.

The following 10 minutes turned into the Jakeem Lee show as his mazy runs through the defence created chance after chance. Eventually man of the match Daniell fired home the fourth, but back came Chippenham to scored third third.

As the final whistle approached Bassett won another penalty corner which was slotted home by Barnes for his third.
