WOOTTON Bassett A’s win over Devizes B secured eighth place in Wilts & NE Somerset One.

The opener came after only five minutes, when good work down the right from Daniel Metson and Luke Salisbury resulted in the latter crossing into the D where David Beale did well to get in front of his marker and divert the ball goalwards.

After the initial effort was saved, Rob Appleby was on hand to reverse sweep the ball into the empty goal.

The lead was doubled with a superb counter attack.

Defender Tom Ponting won the ball on the edge of his own D, and proceeded to carry on his run upfield. He finally received a pass back in the D where he slotted a first-time finish under the keeper.

Bassett’s superior possession was beginning to frustrate the away side, who saw themselves temporarily reduced to 10 men.

The home side took full advantage of this numerical advantage when Jake Nunns swept home after a goal-mouth scramble to make to score 3-0 and put the hosts in control at half time.

Devizes pulled one back after half time and, after their keeper had pulled off fine saves from David Beale, JP Terry and skipper Mike Davies, they then missed a penalty flick.

At the other end, Beale picked up the ball in his own half and accelerated past two opposition players before threading the ball though for Nunns to strike in a neat low finish for his second of the afternoon.

Devizes got another near the end via a deflected short corner strike.
