MARLBOROUGH maintained their 100 per cent home record in the Davis Wood League Central One division as they claimed a 1-0 win over Bristol side Firebrands B.

In pouring rain, Marlborough started well, pegging their opponents back, although the game became congested in midfield.

The home side took the lead after a quick, incisive attacking move led to Will Radnedge skilfully shielding the ball and, after rounding a defender, calmly flicking the ball home.

Marlborough were very much in the ascendancy and had several more opportunities to score before the break.

The second half followed much the same pattern, Marlborough were steadfast in defence with Jonty Moore putting in an excellent shift of break-up play and ball distribution in the middle of midfield.

Marlborough fashioned several excellent chances to score but were unable to convert.

They also had a late scare as Firebrands were awarded a short corner in the final minute of the game but it was defended resolutely, with Rob Moore seeing the ball out of play.

Devizes’ Conference North prospects took a hit as they were defeated 5-2 at Newent.

Roger Edwards scored both goals for the visiting side.

Corsham made it three wins out of three in East Central Two, but were made to work for their 2-1 win over bottom side Chippenham C.

Chippenham keeper John Spooner was in fine form, but Corsham eventually scored through Ian Gould.

Chippenham levelled, but with six minutes remaining Tom Bowery scored the winning goal.

  • CORSHAM’S most junior team, the U9 Minions, made their debut last weekend, in a league hosted by Team Bath Buccaneers.
