LAURIE Canter and Jordan Smith have enjoyed a stellar second day at the BMW SA Open as the Wiltshire duo were briefly the joint-clubhouse leaders at Glendower.

Canter, who plays out of Bradford on Avon’s Cumberwell Park, had started the second round on a score of three under par, but after scoring a round of 66 to leave him nine-under overall and two shot behind overall leader Graeme Storm who is still out on the course in Gauteng.

The 27-year-old was then joined by Derry Hill’s Smith as the clubhouse leader as he returned a second round of four-under 68 to his opening round of 67 to draw level with Canter.

However, their clubhouse lead was quickly usurped by American Peter Uihlein as he returned home with an overall score of 10-under-par.

Canter’s day did not get off to the best start as he bogeyed the opening hole, but soon picked up in the opening nine with a birdie on the second and fifth.

However it was the back nine which really saw Canter make progress despite dropping a shot on the 10th.

His birdie on the 11th appeared to be the catalyst for the rest of his round as he picked up another one on the 12th.

Two more pars were met by an impressive eagle three and birdie on the 15th and 16th before signing off his round with his sixth birdie, leaving him six under for the round and nine under overall.

The 2016 Challenge Tour winner Smith also booked his place for the weekend’s final two rounds with another impressive 18 holes.

The 24-year-old recorded two birdies in his opening four holes, before blemishing his steady start with a bogey on the 16th.

However like Canter, Smith’s back nine was the driving force behind his march up the leader board as he picked up four birdies and one bogey.
