THERE seems to be no stopping Jordan Smith’s astonishing rise after he finished the opening day’s play tied third at the BMW SA Open.

Smith, who is one shot off the leader Trevor Fisher Jnr, shot a five-under-par 67 at Glendower Golf Course in Gauteng was joined on the course by Cumberwell Park’s Laurie Canter who is currently tied 13th with a score of three under.

However, 24-year-old Smith got off to a less than ideal start after he registered a bogey on the opening par four.

But the Bowood pro, who is in his debut season on the European Tour after winning the Challenge Tour last season, was soon able to redeem himself as he claimed one of his seven birdies on the second hole.

That birdie was then backed up by four pars and another three birdies which meant he had a score of three under at the halfway stage.

His good form continued as be hit another par on the 10th, before his progress was slowed by his second bogey of the day on the 11th.

From there Smith was able to settle down as he finished the back nine with a further four pars and three bogeys leaving him with a round of 67. Out of the two it was Canter who made a better start when he began with three consecutive pars on the 10th, 11th and 12th.

The 27-year-old then followed up his good work with a trio of birdies on the next three, before rounding off the opening half with another par in addition to a birdie and bogey.

Canter entered the final nine with a score of three under, before he picked up a second bogey of the day on the first hole.

The next six were far more straightforward as he negotiated them all without dropping a shot and even managed to recover from one of his previous bogeys by claiming a birdie on his 17th hole.

A par on the final hole of the day meant he would finish his round with a score of 69, three shots off of the lead.
