LIAM Spencer claimed the North Wilts Junior Open title when it was contested last Thursday.

Spencer, from Manor House, played four below his handicap of 10 to record a score of 77, four shots clear of the next best gross score.

There was a frustrating hour-long delay due to fog before the three competitions that make up the Junior Open could get under way.

However, for the rest of the day, the action took place in the best weather this annual event has seen, which led to some excellent golf by a record turnout of 75 junior players aged between six and 17.

An 18-hole medal for handicaps up to 20 was also contested and featured three scores below par.

Oli Redpath shot five under his handicap to finish top of the pile ahead of runner-up and North Wilts club-mate Brad Sandford.

The 27 younger pre-handicap golfers played a 10-hole short course competition, with some excellent scores recorded.

The overall winner, from Whitley Golf Club, was 11-year-old Katie Ellis on countback from Broome Manor’s Jacob Venables, aged just eight.

Handicaps 21 to 40 played an 18-hole stableford to a very high standard and Eleanor Harvey (North Wilts) won with 43 points, followed by Gabriella Haynes (Knowle) on 42 and Oliver Griffiths (Sherborne) with 41.
