JORDAN Smith has smashed through the 100,000 point barrier on the Challenge Tour's Road to Oman Order of Merit as he closes in on a place on the 2017 European Tour.

The Derry Hill player finished fourth at the Cordon Golf Open in France at the weekend to reclaim his position at the head of the standings on European golf's second-tier tour.

First-round leader Smith saw his hopes of claiming a second title of the season dented by a four-over-par round of 74 on day three at the Golf Blue Green de Pléneuf Val André.

But the Bowood player recovered well on Sunday's final day, carding a five-under-par 65 to climb back towards the top of the leaderboard, Spain's Alvaro Velasco staging a dramatic final day comeback to win with an eight under par 62.

That was enough for Smith to become the first player to top 100,000 points this season and overtake previous pacesetter France's Romain Langasque at the top of the Road to Oman standings.

The top 15 players on the Challenge Tour at the end of the season earn playing rights to the 2017 European Tour and Smith now heads to this week's Volopa Irish Challenge.
