WILTSHIRE'S bid to represent the South West at the county championship finals at the end of September proved unsuccessful in Cornwall yesterday.

The county, captained by Marlborough's Paul Green, finished fifth out of the sixth teams at the South West qualifier, which ran alongside the South West Amateur Championship at South West Week at St Enodoc.

Host county Cornwall claimed the South West spot at the national finals at Sandwell Park Golf Club in West Bromwich later this summer with a combined 20 over par total.

Six Wiltshire scores counted towards their overall total, North Wilts Golf Club's Jack Charman leading the way with a two-round total of 147, nine over par.

Meanwhile Bowood Golf & Country Club's Luke Gorman, whose score did not count towards the team competition, shot a combined 142 to finish ninth overall in the South West Amateur Championship.

That event was won by Gloucestershire player Laurie Potter, whose combined 133 (five under par) handed him victory by two shots.

Wiltshire were resuming their Inter-County Team Championship commitments against Dorset at St Enodoc today, having recorded a win and a defeat in the opening two rounds on Sunday and Monday.

Meanwhile, Wiltshire's U14/16 side are regional champions and claimed individual honours after winning the South West title at Honiton Golf Club in Devon last week.

The county side were winners of the event by nine shots, while James Cooper, from the Cumberwell Park club near Bradford on Avon shot 72 to win the individual event.

Ogbourne Downs' Jake Bolton was crowned 2016 Wiltshire Boys champion at Kingsdown with rounds of 73 and 70.

Max Mulcock (Wrag Barn) shot a first-round 71 for a two-shot cushion over Bolton and Dom Burgess (Salisbury & SW) after the first round.

But in the afternoon, Bolton pulled clear with a two under par 70 giving him a six-stroke triumph.

Jamie Cooper (Bowood) shot level par 72 for second place ahead of Burgess on countback.
