BOWOOD’S Sam Matton will continue utilising his secret weapon as he chases a dream place on the European Tour.

The 25-year-old, a regular on the Europro Tour and Jamega Tour, made it through to the second stage of qualifying for Europe’s elite tour earlier this month after finishing tied 21st at Frilford Heath at an initial qualifying stage.

Matton, who reached the final stage of Q School in 2011 but failed to make the final cut, will take the next step in his latest journey at the Lumine Golf and Beach Club in Tarragona, Spain, on November 2-5 and is relying on his trusty, long-serving putter to fire him into the final stage once again.

“I’d been playing really nicely but I was struggling on the greens a bit at Frilford Heath so I decided to bring out my old putter for my final round,” said Matton, who lives in Swindon.

“My putting was a lot better with it and I managed to make the cut. I’ve had it for as long as I can remember but I think that it’ll definitely be staying in my bag for the time being.

“It’s so far, so good this year. I got to the final stage a couple of years ago and that was a great experience.

“Q School is different to a lot of other competitions because everybody really keeps themselves to themselves.

“In the past, my mistake has been worrying too much about what other people are doing and I’m going to make sure that I just concentrate on my own game.

“I’m not too worried about Spain because I know that I’ve got through the second stage before.

“Getting on the European Tour is what everyone professional golfer in Europe dreams of.”
